Jessica Curry is a Queensland born, Melbourne based artist, currently undertaking a Bachelor of Fine Art at the Royal Melbourne Institute of Photography. Curry has been awarded the MMAS Photography Section, Winner, Gold Coast (2012) and the ASAS Excellence in the Arts Award (2004). Curry looks at modes of consumption, consumerism, materiality and the role of the ‘art object’ in contemporary art. In $2.80 all the components of the assemblages photographed add up to $2.80 each. Has Curry constructed a work of art that can sit comfortably amongst the shelves of a Daiso store? Alongside dented Tupperware, Hello Kitty pencil cases and the latest Korean snack food? Where there are no hierarchies, no distinctions – everything has the same value, everything costs $2.80.
