Peter Thomas lives and works in Melbourne. He completed a Master of Fine Art (Research) at the Victorian College of the Arts in 2010, for which he received an Australian Postgraduate Award scholarship. He received the Athenaeum Club Award in 2010 and was the inaugural recipient of the Stuart Black Memorial Traveling Scholarship in 2012, which enabled him to travel to Europe and visit sites of memorial importance like Dachau, Auschwitz and Srebrenica. He has exhibited widely in Melbourne and interstate, most recently in 2013 at Linden Contemporary as part of their Innovators program. Thomas’s art practice has a fixation with trauma, the places where traumatic events take place, and the ways in which they are remembered, forgotten or ignored. Styling himself a lay detective or archaeologist, his work is informed by hours spent wading through archived newspapers, documents and ephemera. His recent works, beautifully executed using ink on paper and oil on canvas are new readings of everyday spaces, offered through the prism of the public record and traces of the past found in the streets and buildings of the present.
