THREE NEW ART
AWARDS
INCLUDING
THE INAUGURAL
ARKLEY PRIZE WERE ANNOUNCED AT 2010 NOTFAIR

NotFair announced three new art prizes worth a total of $25,000 established to encourage emerging artists.

The inaugural Arkley Prize has been established to honour the memory of the much-loved artist Howard Arkley who represented Australia at the Venice Biennial in 1999 and who tragically passed away that same year.

Established by Arkley’s mother, Gwen, and her late partner Frank Lewis, the Arkley Prize awarded $15,000 to an artist selected from NotFair by an esteemed group of judges. The prize aimed to acknowledge the skills of an emerging artist and reflect Howard Arkley’s passion as practitioner and teacher.

“We’ve done it in memory of Howard,” said Gwen Arkley. “I feel he would have wanted to help younger artists. He won awards himself, but he was also a very generous artist, teacher and friend.”

“I want this to go on in perpetuity,” she said. “I want his memory to live on.”

A further two prizes were supported by legal firm Lipmann Karas and entertainment agency Profile Talent Management.
